Warts are small, usually painless growths on the skin caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). Most, but not all, are generally harmless. Typically a wart is a raised, round or oval growth on the skin with a rough surface that may be lighter, darker, or black in color. There are several types of warts, common, that appear mainly on the hands, plantar that appear on the soles of the feet, and flat that are usually found on the face.
