Psoriasis/Eczema

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a common, chronic skin disease causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin, forming thick silvery scales and itchy, dry, red patches that are sometimes painful. Anyone can get it, however it is not contagious, and most commonly begins between ages 15 and 35. Normal skin cells growth is deep in the skin and the cells rise to the surface about once a month. In persons with psoriasis, this process occurs much faster causing dead skin cells build up on the skin’s surface resulting in skin redness and irritation. Although there is no cure for psoriasis, treatments may offer significant relief.

Eczema

Eczema is term for a group of medical conditions that cause the skin to become inflamed or irritated. The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema. Eczema is usually itchy with a rash, and most commonly occurs on the face, back of the knees, wrists, hands, or feet, however it may also affect other areas of the body as well.

Skin affected by eczema usually appears very dry, thickened, or scaly. The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but seems to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to an irritant. It is the body’s response to this irritant that causes the symptoms of eczema. Once diagnosised by your dermatologist, treatments for eczema can include creams, lotions and photo therapy.
